The location of Samford

Samford village in the Samford Valley is almost like a country town, but it's only 25 kilometres (15.5 miles) from the centre of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Almost all of our members live on acreage in this picturesque rural residential community within the precincts of the Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Our region is called a land for all seasons. It offers people a rich and fascinating diversity of habitat and activity virtually unparalleled in South East Queensland, Australia. Our beautiful shire is blessed with four distinct geographic landscapes, ranging from ocean shore, extensive lake systems, rural countryside and towering mountain scrapes coated in luxuriant flora.

Coupled to such geographic contrasts is an almost endless availability of cultural, heritage, country, culinary, sporting and passive pursuits.

The satellite image below may give you a better idea of our locality.

The Samford Valley is a shining jewel in the Moreton Bay Region. We are a community of about 5,000 families and is nestled between Camp Mountain to the south, House Mountain to the north, a spur of the D'aguilar Range with Mount Nebo, Mount O'Reilly and Mount Glorious to the west and the Brisbane Forest Park to the east.

We have a saying in Samford; "Beautiful one day, glorious the next." Our valley is, indeed, a beautiful part of the world.

Samford is linked to Brisbane by a road passing through 7 kilometer of forest which separates our community from the "burbs" of the city.

Samford History

Samford has its own history and the community is very proud of our heritage. The Moreton Bay Regional Council and the progress association work hard to retain the colonial charm of Samford Village.

If you would like to know a bit more about the history of our community please visit Samford Museum in Station St. Samford Village. The museum is open on Sundays 10am - 4pm (except Christmas School Holidays and Easter) and open on Australia Day, Anzac day and Queensland Day.

The Samford Railway Station was opened on the Dayboro line on 1 July 1918 and closed 30 June 1955. The line was eventually opened all the way to Dayboro by 1920. For many years, more bananas were shipped to Melbourne and Sydney from Samford than from any where else, until "bunchytop" wiped out the entire industry. Timber was also an important industry as was dairying. Granite from Camp Mountain was also sought after. The foundations of the Brisbane City Hall were from there. One of the many historic sites in the Samford Valley is the train tunnel, which is now an important bat colony.

Another historic site is the aboriginal ceremonial "Bora-ring" at Wights Mountain. Our club has worked with the historical society erecting plaques etc. to acknowledge these and other significant sites.

We also built an entertainment stage in John Scott Park in the middle of the village on the site of the Samford railway station.

We have a very active historical society and the Samford Museum is well worth a visit.

Our Community

Samford Valley is also called the "Home of the Powerful Owl", an initiative of the local shire council, in recognition of an important breeding area for the bird in the Camp Mountain area of the valley. The powerful owl, Australia's largest owl, is shy and rarely seen. Whilst few in numbers, they are not endangered, but large habitats need to be preserved to provide the numerous 'poison free' prey animals to sustain the species.

Generally, Samford residents are very aware of our environment together with environmental protection and preservation concerns which are supported, encouraged and promoted by local Rotarians, the Progress Association and Moreton Bay Regional Council. Another of Rotary's community projects is the ongoing establishment of a recreational park, which we call the Undambi Rotary Park. The project involves landscaping, tree planting, playground equipment, walking tracks and fencing.

Local businesses range from an international mining consultancy and national insurance brokers to quality restaurants a supermarket and produce stores. Others include accountants, a bank, solicitors, surveyors, doctors, pharmacy, post office, news agency, the hotel, of course, primary school, garage, hardware, travel agency, real-estate agencies, etc., etc..

Samford - nearly all the people comforts of the city, but without the noise, pollution and the hustle and bustle.
