From the Village Pump, Friday October 10, 2003 Samford Rotaract News Since the start of the new Rotaract year on 1st July the Samford Rotaract Club lead by new President Andrew Pope has been busy broadening its horizons and most importantly having plenty of fun in the process. The lead up to Christmas promises to be as hectic as ever with a never ending schedule of events on the way. The group recently conducted a “Cuban” night with members of the group preparing all the food in traditional Cuban style, listening to Cuban music and even having the opportunity to learn about and sample a Cuban cigar. In keeping with the International theme the group also attended the Russian film “The Cuckoo”, as part of the Brisbane International Film Festival. Carol from RACQ Careflight Helicopters was a guest speaker at a recent meeting and all members came away with an amazing appreciation of the skill and commitment of the pilots and support staff and the great job they do. Rotaract also organized a Chocolate Appreciation Night where all members got to sample some of the finest chocolates from all around the world. The Samford Rotaract Club will soon be presenting to Samford Rotary the funds raised as part of last years Polio Plus campaign. This year members of the club will be proving assistance to the Samford RSL to help with the establishment of its Community Hall. Members will be participating in working bees and raising funds for the Samford RSL. Look out for Rotaract members at this years “Music by the Lake” where they will be manning the food stalls selling a range cold drinks, coffee, hot food and snacks. This year’s event on promises to be the best ever so please get out and support it. Other upcoming events include guest speakers from Mercy Ships and the RSL at the next two meetings. The annual Cocktail Party is set down for 1st November. This event is always a favorite amongst members and will be bigger and better than ever this year. Other events on the drawing board include learning to Latin Dance, a Fondue Party and visits to Donations in Kind. Rotaract Members would like to congratulate President Andrew Pope for all the hard work and training he has done lately. Andrew has qualified for selection in the Australian Athletic team for the 2004 Paralympics in Athens. A fantastic achievement and we know that he will do us all proud. Rotaract is a non-denominational, apolitical group with clubs throughout Australia and the World. Membership is open to all men and women between the ages of 18 and 30. Rotaract aims to develop leadership and responsible citizenship through service to the community, professional service and international understanding. All while having fun. Samford Rotaract meets on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month at the Samford Restaurant commencing at 7pm.
