ROTARY CLUB OF SAMFORD VALLEY - Club History

Although the Rotary Club of Samford Valley was chartered on the 8th October 1980, the first documented meeting as the "Provisional Rotary Club of Samford Valley" was held on the 1st September 1980 at the Samford Bowls Club. Office bearers of the proposed club were elected on the 25th August 1980 at the last of several 'unofficial' meetings held at the Samford Valley Farmers Hall.

Our 'mother' club was the Rotary Club of Michelton.

"We would like to officially record our thanks to Rotarians Don Hay, Past President Bruce Dick, Past President Brian Hanley, Past District Governor Cec. Walton, and particularly to Past President Lawrence Burnett for their time and untiring efforts in getting us started and also to our Immediate Past District Governor Ben Bennett, under whose directions and interest we first started the survey of a possible local club, and now to our present District Governor Bill Upton."

Extracted from Volume 1, Number 1 of the Bulletin of the Rotary Club of Samford Valley.

Other charter members were Clem Gillies, Ian Matthewson, Paul Kilpatrick, Jim Ceccato, Norm Carlyon, John Soutar, Ray Beveridge, Alan Hill, Brian Sheahan, Russell Barrett, Peter Collins, Barry Cochrane, Jeff Eade, Dave Pollack, Ian Vickery, David Anderson and PP and PDG Frank Aston.

The first service project undertaken by the Rotary Club of Samford Valley was to provide a water supply tank, drainage and suitable toilet facilities for children and attendants at the Samford Playgroup in Main Street, Samford. The club donated $400.00 toward the proposed total expenditure of $1400.00 and provided labour in the form of working bees. In order to make this donation, the club 'loaned' the money from its "club account" to its "activities account". The club account had a balance of $477.67 at the time. The club completed the project on the 27th January 1981.

A picture of Samford Playgroup today.

Vocational service got off to a good start by initiating the "Operation Big Brother" project, involving working with the armed forces and offering assistance, counseling and hosting of young people coming to the city seeking to join the armed forces.

In February, President John highlighted the need for assistance to the Samford Show committee and the actual running of the show. In March the club cast about for interest to initiate a rotaract club, but there was little response. During the year, the club inducted five new members, but also lost five members. Rotarians canvassed the valley for donations on behalf of the rural fire brigade and collected some $1200.00.

The club participated in its first international project by arranging, through District 960, to supply suitable goats to the Philippines as part of the "Milk for Millions" project.

The club's first fundraising endeavour was in May, 1981 catering for the people attending the Dayboro Endurance Ride. The project raised $500.00 for the club.

Projects approved by the Board for the club's second year were:

1. Clean up around the dump (between Carlyons Road and Arrow Smiths Road).
2. Erect a "Welcome to Samford Valley" sign at the top of the 'range' at the entry to the Samford Valley.
3. Road-side tree planting.
4. Provide an electric bar-b-que for John Scott Park.
5. The annual rural fire brigade appeal collection.
6. Arrange for a handbook for living in the Samford Valley.
7. Investigate the feasibility of a community centre on land adjoining John Scott Park.
With a bit of help from a few benevolent Michelton Rotarians, Samford Rotary organised and assisted with the Samford Show, collecting money at the gate, parking and running the show bar.

Unfortunately, for various reasons, the clean up, the sign and the tree planting didn't eventuate, but three other projects, the construction of bridle paths linking 'green' belts around Samford, a driving/road care campaign, and the development of a sporting and recreational facility at Highvale were proposed.

The driving/road care campaign was a success with a vehicle safety day and driver training event undertaken.

The club also embarked on an ambitious community project involving a commitment to raise $20,000 towards the construction of the proposed Samford Kindergarten. To that end, the club began regular pot-plant stalls and Sunday raffles in the hotel - the target, $1000.00 per month.

Again, this year, the club catered for the Dayboro Endurance Ride raising $450.00 despite appalling weather conditions. Also children's books were sent to Papua New Guinea.

The main focus for the club entering into 1982/83 was to "build on the previous year's experiences" in an endeavour to consolidate and develop, together with the kindergarten project. In International Service, the club wanted to encourage members to cement the newly established relationship with a club in India as part of the matched district project which also includes clubs from England and Scotland.

Samford Kindergarten.

The club organised an endurance ride early in the year which raised $366.00 and members considered the feasibility of sponsoring an "Inner Wheel" club in the Samford Valley. Samford Rotary provided a cricket pitch for the Mt. Nebo State School and Rotarians participated in the "Dial-a-Santa" project.

1982 was the year that Brisbane hosted the Commonwealth Games. Samford Rotary did their bit by organising cleanups, pot plants on footpaths and flying Australian flags.

The biggest ongoing community project however, was the Samford Show. Several Rotarians were members of the show committee and twelve months of planning and organising culminated in a very successful show. Not only did Rotary raise funds directly, but with guidance, enabled almost all other community groups to raise funds for themselves.

The club supplied and distributed poisons charts to the community and also collected used stamps to trade and provide serum to combat illness in Nepal and Bangladesh. Ralph Donnet was nominated and sponsored to travel to Japan as part of a GSE team.

1983 was the year that the club awarded its first "Paul Harris Fellow" to Cec. Smart. The award was presented by Clem Renouf, by the way.

PS. The kindergarten was built during the year and officially handed over on the 5th June 1983 at a cost of $25,278.99. The club had contributed to the project to the extent of $18,878.99. The club had to arrange finance to meet the shortfall but were able to pay the loan off in twelve months.

Following active participation in the organising, promoting and running of the 1983 Samford Show - the bar raised $2000.00 for the coffers - the club focussed on its sponsorship of a high profile event - the Ron Grant around Australia fundraising run/marathon. His progress took up most of the club's attention at the beginning of the year. Subsequently, an auction was organised featuring some of Ron Grant's personal kit, including a pair of running shoes and two of his support caravans. Proceeds went towards development of the Samford State School oval, the scout den, the rural fire brigade and the historical society. $500.00 was donated to the Scouts toward their den.

The annual endurance ride was supported and a plan to establish a local probus club was considered. Stamps continued to be collected to provide serum to Asian destinations. The club hosted the Japanese GSE team and Samford participated in the Youth Exchange program. The club also sponsored two students to Rotary Youth Leadership Award camps.

On the local scene, tree planting and beautification of the Highvale Sports Ground took place, the club held its inaugural Melbourne Cup function and assistance was given to the historical society to host their "Back to Samford" day.

The club donated $1400.00 toward the renovations to Brisbane's International House and presented the first Sports Day Trophy at the Samford State School sports day.

1984/84 must have been the year for running. A lot of interest surrounded the exploits of another nationally acclaimed runner, Cliff Young. Following a fundraising night in conjunction with Michelton, a donation was made to the Papua New Guinea water purification program.

After a somewhat unsettled year, the club embarked on the new rotary year in regroup mode. The objectives for the year include:

1. Build up club reserves via larger fundraising efforts.
2. Restructuring the club.
3. Reorganisation of the work load in line with results of a recent survey.
4. Consider a local Rotaract club.
5. Investigate feasibility of major projects for consideration by the club.
6. Efforts to rekindle fellowship within the club.
After such a positive start, the year began hesitantly with a very wet Samford Show, the bar from which, only raised $800.00. The annual endurance ride also, only raised $150.00.

On top of that, the club was obliged to change venue for its weekly meetings from the Samford Bowls Club to the "Bullyard Bistro" at the Golden Valley Hotel.

The club did however, find enough money raised from the Cliff Young fundraising evening to purchase a phototherapy unit for an Indian hospital. The club also was presented with a certificate in recognition of contributions made to the Rotary Foundation.

Our certificate.

One major project hatched by the club this year was the Samford Country Auction to be held in John Scott Park, Samford. Preparations for the auction was a major endeavour for the club. It was decided that proceeds from the auction would go towards supporting an appeal to fund Queensland's third liver transplant operation, and the patient, Brendan Grey.

Rotarian, Jim Frigo died in November, 1984.

This year started on a more positive note than the last, even though attendance at weekly meetings the lack of member participation in community endeavours remained a concern within the club.

1. The 1985/86 objectives were listed as:
2. Increase membership to 30.
3. Increase attendance.
4. Improve the quality of meetings.
5. Maintain contact with the club's exchange student.
6. Maintain contact with Papua New Guinea clubs regarding RYLA matched clubs.
7. Sponsor RYLA awardees from Papua New Guinea.
8. Demonstrate fellowship with other groups and individuals in the community.
9. Have more interclub gatherings.
10. At least one member to attend a mini RYLA.
11. Complete the commitment to International House.
12. Complete the Samford Kindergarten project.
13. Have more regular committee meetings.

Other objectives noted were the feasibility of an ambulance station for Samford, an LP6 heart machine for donation, continuing assistance to the historical society and to continue collecting stamps for the 'provide serum' project.

Even though there was little support recorded, the club donated $2000.00 to the historical society and conducted many working bees to help establish the Samford Museum.

The Samford Museum.

The annual endurance ride was again attended and a "Beef Fest" was organised at "The Pines" resort.

1985 was the year that The Samford Rotary Club initiated plans to become The Samford Rotary Club Inc. following recommendations and subsequent concerns about insurance and other liability matters.

The club had some excellent guest speakers this year including Jim Rediex from the trans-australian safari rally fame.

For the first time the club was involved with the Samford Rodeo, netting $900.00, which helped pay for the supply and installation of the rural fire brigade station roof.

The Samford Rural Fire Brigade Station today.

The club hosted the GSE team from the US, and nominated two students to attend RYLA.

As the 1986 show approached, the club dumped the endurance ride in favour of the show, the two events occurring on the same weekend. The club's ongoing commitment to the show was demonstrated by the financing and construction of a 500 metre section of boundary fence for the new show venue at Highvale.

Samford Rotary also nominated a successful applicant, Kate Proctar, to travel to Canada for twelve months as a Rotary Youth Exchange student.

The Samford Show was the first event of the rotary year with Rotarians involved in the planning, organising, gate and parking on the day and, of course, running the bar.

Tracey Wirth was this year's incoming Exchange Student and the club gave her $60.00 per month. The club also participated in RYLA, career talks at the Ferny Grove State High School, and "Bridging the Gap", a district project.

Samford Rotary donated $500.00 to the Samford Scouts to provide materials etc. for landscaping and $300.00 toward the Pine Rivers Community Youth Scheme. Three members attended the meetings to support this local initiative.

Every year, Samford Rotary erect coloured lights to form a Christmas tree outside Samford's "Farmers Hall". This year $300.00 was spent maintaining these lights. And this year the club erected a new flagpole outside the farmers hall which was necessary and also as a better "tree" for the coloured lights.

The flagpole in front of Samford's Farmers Hall.

The club committed the club to $1000.00 per year, starting this year toward Rotary International's "Polio Plus" project.

$520.00 was allocated to provide concrete paths to the Golden Valley Pony Club in Samford and $250.00 was contributed towards a fundraising campaign to provide a bus for the Grovely Tertiary and Further Education campus. The club also contributed $50.00 to the Rotary Club of Honiara for their charter. FAIM members were supported by the club to the extent of $250.00.

Samford Rotary also assisted the "Men of Trees" in a tree planting project.

In this year also, the CWA Hall construction project was tabled for consideration.

The Samford Show came and went with all hands assisting with car parking and collecting admission at the gate, as well as running the bar.

Most of the club's efforts throughout this year was directed to the CWA project, ie. The construction of a hall for the use of the local Country Women's Association. Funding was sourced from various areas of government and the CWA itself, but Samford Rotary organised the works and provided floor coverings for the new building to the extent of $3061.00.

The Samford CWA Hall then.

And today.

$1000.00 went to Polio Plus in terms of the club's commitment made last year and $200.00 went towards RYLA.

President Steve holding up the club's 100% Polio Plus banner.

The club presented a "courtesy" award to local bus driver, Jerry O'Riordan.

The incoming GSE team from England were hosted by Samford Rotary and donations were made to the cancer campaign and $500.00 to the Ferny Grove State High School.

1988 was the year that Brisbane hosted the World Expo and Samford Valley Rotarians did their bit by participating in the roster to man the Rotary Information Booth.

The club contributed to the Matched Twin Exchange by providing blazers, text books etc.

This was also the year that the Picnic Races evolved. One requirement, however, was to construct a fence to define the actual race track, at a cost of $2200.00. Originally called Samford Country Capers and suggested by PP/PDG Frank Aston, the proposed carnival including quarter mile horse races became the Samford Picnic Races - a successful event that ran for several years and netted substantial funds for Samford Rotary.

During the year, Samford Rotary participated in the National Summer Science School, continued to support the Rotary Foundation to earn accreditation towards another Paul Harris Fellow award, participated in tree planting out at Lake Samsonvale and sponsored an outgoing Youth Exchange.

The club also embarked upon water supply project in the Solomon Islands. This year, it began with the provision of a $150.00 header tank as part of the works.

Held in July each year, the Samford Show remains the club's first major commitment. This year was no exception with the bar netting a healthy $4400.00. But the Board decided to cancel the long lasting hotel raffles, seen as too much of a regular commitment for members and contributing disharmony and discontent within the club.

The picnic races were held and was also very successful and profitable netting the club about $9000.00. Life Education received a donation of $3000.00 from the proceeds.

Two members, Peter Collins and Ian Spiller did a FAIM trip to Papua New Guinea and the club contributed to Donations in Kind.

One of the very interesting vocational visits was a trip to Amberley Air Force Base.

Preparations were well under way to host Exchange Student, Cathy Eagles and discussions were held to provide a concrete path to service the CWA hall.

Samford Rotary subsidised the purchase price of bicycle helmets offered to Samford State School students resulting in the sale of 68 helmets costing the club $505.00. The club changed banks on two occasions this year for various reasons and introduced a joining fee for new members.

A small business seminar was organised and the club contributed to "Bridging the Gap".

A donation of $1000.00 was made to the Cardiovascular unit and the club also donated $500.00 to the Rotary Club of Charleville to assist in the Western Flood Relief project.

Long serving Rotarian and charter member, PP/PDG Frank Aston was declared an honorary member of the club.

Samford Rotary had a very active year, particularly club activities. The Picnic Races were held again and was a great success. The Melbourne Cup Function was also a great success as was the show bar and "Christmas in the Village". The club had a particularly good line-up of guest speakers this year, enjoyed four inter-club visits and a couple of very interesting vocational visits.

In International Service, the club hosted a South African exchange student, Darren Scorgie. Samford Rotary donated funds to the Rotary Foundation and a heart foundation project initiated by the Rotary Club of Mt. Hagen. The club became involved in "Donations in Kind", sourcing medical equipment and supplies.

The club had another very productive year and received its Presidential Citation well within district criteria. President Graham's goal for the year was growth. Growth in club membership and growth in overall Rotary involvement. The club achieved a net membership growth of five new members.

The picnic races were held once again with great success with the Samford Rangers Junior Sporting Association being the local beneficiary to the tune of $2,500. The major beneficiary was the Wesley Hospital Rotary Lodge Project.

The club enjoyed a varied and interesting programme of club activities including tennis, Christmas party, Melbourne Cup party, an inter-club debate and a progressive dinner.

The club donated money to the Samford Show Society ($3,000) towards the provision of power and toilet blocks, and Life Education Pine Rivers and an international contribution to repair surgical aids. Whilst on things international, Samford Rotary was keen to participate in the Rotary Youth Exchange programme this year but did not for various reasons. Donations in Kind was well supported, however with the club arranging a container of refurbished medical equipment to be sent to the Rabual Hospital via the Rotary Club of Rabaul.

The club sponsored students to attend the Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment (RYPEN), the Siemens Science Summer School and the Engineering Summer School.

Despite the club's best efforts, the picnic races appeared to approach it's "used by" date and was not the success hoped for. However, $2,150 was distributed between the district's Volunteer Rural Fire Brigades and a further $2,000 was donated to the Australian Lung Foundation.

The club's support and subsequent Art Show and sale for the drought ravaged Western Families resulted in donations totalling $9,000, and this was the year that the Rotary Station in John Scott Park was built.

The Rotary Station completed.

Through the club's youth activities, 10 young people received support to nominate/attend a total of six different Rotary programmes. Samford Rotary also sponsored a young Solomon Island girl under the PACE programme and then hosted the Singapore/Malaysian Group Study Exchange Team.

The club also established perpetual access to part of a shed which was erected on the State School oval with the club's assistance and participated in Landcare and tree planting. A concrete floor was constructed for the Samford State School and donated $1,000 towards the purchase of a bus for the Bald Hills Young Disabled Hospital. Work on the establishment of a Historical Trail around Samford began. Participation in the Donations in Kind programme continued and a donation of $600 was made to the Rotary Foundation.

This year was also the year that the Rotary Club of Samford Valley inducted its first female rotarian, Gwynne Thomas. On the club front, rotarians played cricket against Mt. Nebo - and won - tennis, attended another great Melbourne Cup party and a 60's dance.

1994/95 was a busy and successful year. It was also a harmonious year with the now legendary 'pig shoot' weekend and a 'father and offspring' weekend at Stradbroke Island. The more memorable service endeavours across the board were:

The active participation in the district's "Gift of Life" program with patient Mary Mangarade who, after life saving surgery continues to prosper.
Acted as Councillor for an Ambassadorial scholar - Carol Gay.
A 40% club attendance to the annual District Conference.
The introduction of "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner".
Greg Meek's 'Paul Harris Fellow' award.
Provision of fencing for Ian Brown, a deserving local community resident who had suffered a stroke.
And club sponsorship of a number of children to attend the scouting association's "Ogooneroo" camp in Samford for the disabled.

Other community projects included a concrete path in Samford's John Scott Park, a sheltered history plaque at the site of the culturally important 'Bora-ring' at Wights Mountain, the market festival (albeit a very wet market), and donations to the Children's Hospital towards a new retrieval capsule and to 'Camp Quality'. On top of these, the club honoured its annual commitments - show parking and the bar, Christmas in the Village, the school fete parking and the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal.

The club also erected a "Four Way Test" sign at the rear of the stage of the rotary station in John Scott Park, participated in the "Employ Australia" campaign, donated money to the district "Bridging The Gap" committee and provided member contact details for use in the district vocational data bank.

Rotarians completed a two weekend fencing project for Ian Brown, a well respected member of the community and who suffered a stroke.

Samford Rotary nominated students to attend the CRA National Science School, the Siemens Science School, the CRA National Youth Leadership Forum, Ryla, Asia Pacific Leadership Development Seminar as well as presented awards to the Golden Valley Pony Club (Samford) member of the year, The Rotary Young Achiever Award (2), and the Samford State School Rotary Citizenship Award.

This was a very busy year for Samford Rotary.

The key objectives for this year were:

1. Continue with "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner".
2. Support and participate in the annual commitments.
3. Be active with community projects.
4. Organise local collection of the Salvation Army's Red Shield Appeal.
5. Support the Rotary Foundation and DIK.
6. Host a GSE team.
7. Organise interesting vocational visits and maintain interesting guest speakers for regular weekly meetings.
8. Participate in as many of Rotary's youth programs as possible.

The Golden Valley Hotel in Samford changed hands. The club considered changing venues for the weekly meetings but, in the end, we stayed on. 1995/96 was also the year that a scribe was nominated to take the load off the bulletin editor. The Melbourne Cup function was held at the bowls club this year and "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" continued with resounding success and support.

The Golden Valley Hotel, Samford.

As well as the annual activities, the show parking and bar, the school fete parking and "Christmas in the Village", the club organised and assisted with the renovation of the RSL Hall, constructed 500m of boundary fence at the showgrounds and arranged for collection of the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal.

Rotarians also participated in the "Clean Up Australia" project. A very respectable 30km was cleaned up.

Part of the clean up.

1995/96 was a very active year in International Service with a contribution to "Rotary Against Malaria" project, and a $1500 donation to the Rotary Foundation. The club sourced about $25000 worth of disused medical equipment, now put to good use in Papua New Guinea through "Donations in Kind" as well as a healthy donation to DIK.

Samford Rotary also hosted the Californian GSE team this year. And the club donated $2200 to provide for the construction of a Rotahome in a cyclone devastated area of Fiji.

The GSE team from California, USA.

There were three very interesting vocational visits this year. TV station 10 was interesting, as was the University Of Queensland visit to have a look at the "Scram Jet" project. Rotarians and partners also visited the "Cotah" restaurant, the training restaurant at the Southbank Institute of Technical and Further Education.

The Club sponsored two students to attend the Information Technology Autumn School, and two students to attend this year's Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment. Damien Van Duijnhoven was sponsored to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Award program and John Ridley attended the CRA National Youth Science Forum. Their were three participants at the Siemens Summer Science School. The club also participated in the "Matched Twin Exchange" program and donated $1000 to the Youth Achievement Program helping students develop practical business skills. A donation of $450 was also made to the Scout Association to sponsor disabled kids to attend the Agooneree Camp.

Ben Shannon won the Samford State School Citizenship Award.

This was quite an unsettling year for the club culminating in the resignation of the president, Ian Muil in October. Last year's president, Peter Gloor took up the position and steered the club steadily for the remainder of the year. As well as the club's normal annual commitments, the Melbourne Cup function, Guess Who's coming to Dinner, Christmas in the Village, the school fair and, of course, the Market Festival.

The show society ended a long running relationship with the club and found others to park cars at the show and run the show bar.

The change of guard also had an effect on Community Service. However, the club still had an active year. Tree planting to stabilize and beautify the creek bank in Main Street took place and subsequent maintenance, and from Christmas in the Village proceeds, a line marking machine was donated to the Samford State School. The club contributed to the restoration of the old catholic church and presented a new overhead projector to the Rural Fire Brigade.

The line marking machine being presented to groundsman, Neil McTaggart.

A further donation was made to the Children's' Hospital and discussions with the historical society began to organise a heritage trail throughout the valley. Rotary signs on either side of Samford village were replaced with new ones, and the club promoted and sold life saving videos - a project by the Brisbane Rotary Club. Samford Rotary provided a water pipe to access town water for the Samford Scouts.

The club organised a memorial service, tours of the Samford Museum, which had a special display, and refreshments for survivors and others to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Australia's second worst train crash disaster, in 1947, at Camp Mountain in the Samford Valley.

In 1996/97, the club initiated contact with the Rotary Club of Colombo North, Sri Lanka to embark on an inter-club relationship for mutual benefit. Other international endeavours included further involvement with Donations in Kind, a joint hosting with the Albany Creek Club of the French GSE team, participation in the Gift of Life Program with patient Margaret Tomba and the presentation of two "Paul Harris Fellows" - an indication of the club's financial support to the Rotary Foundation.

The club sponsored five more children to attend the scout's Agooneree camp for the disabled, and participated in the selection of Queensland's "Young Achievement Award". A donation of $500.00 was made to the "Project Australia Program" and arranged for a Ferny Grove State High School student, Natalie Rees to attend the Rotary "Adventures in Citizenship" scheme.

Samford Rotary presented the annual citizenship award and the school sports award in conjunction with the Samford State School and sponsored students to attend RYPEN and RYLA. The club had a successful applicant for the CRA National Science Forum and three students to attend the Siemens Science School as well as two students to attend the Information Technology Autumn School.

A highlight in the 1996/97 calendar was the vocational visit to the pathology laboratory of DR Sullivan and Nicolaides, a fascinating experience.

The key objectives for the year were as follows:
1. To recreate a positive environment for fellowship and fun within our club and provide an interesting program of club activities and weekly meetings, with good value meals.
2. To ensure the administration of the club is open, professional and efficient.
3. To really work hard on our club's history.
4. To include our partners and families as much as possible.
5. Ties with the Rotary Club of Colombo North, to enrich our relationship with the Albany Creek Club and re-establish ties with the Michelton Club, our "mother" club.
6. To honour R.I. and its founder, Paul Harris and to award one Paul Harris fellow.
7. Promote and expand the market festival.
8. Achieve a local hands-on project.
9. Australia Day citizenship event and a cultural operatic event.
10. Support the Samford State School and its fair.
11. A net gain of three new members.
12. Continue our active youth program.
13. Apply for a Presidential Citation.
14. A support visit to the Bribie Island club.
15. Reintroduce job talks.

The club had a very active year achieving its objectives particularly in the avenue of community service with significant donations to the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund and the Gift of Life program. The club participated in several community projects; car window etching to reduce the likelihood of car theft, involvement in the annual Salvation Army "Red Shield Appeal", Xmas in the Village, the school fair parking, and a blood bank collection and sausage sizzle. Opera by the Lake had its debut (see separate page), and its success enabled us to establish the Samford Valley Emergency Fund. We naturalised 22 new citizens in an Australia Day citizenship ceremony, maintenance on previous community projects and we erected heritage plaques on granite boulders marking three historical sites in Samford Valley.

This is a picture of one of the historical site markers.

The club also began development of a recreational park in the Samford Valley called the 'Undambi Rotary Park"

Undambi Rotary Park.

Although the club didn't award a Paul Harris fellow, an appropriate donation was made to the Rotary Foundation, as well as a donation to the 3H program in Bangladesh. We established a link with the Rotary Club of Colombo North and was able to arrange for urgently needed equipment to be sent there. The club hosted the GSE team from New York, met a number of Ambassadorial Scholars, and continued our participation in the Donations in Kind Program. A matching grant arranged through the district, from the Rotary Foundation, enabled the club to make a significant contribution, the purchase and supply of water bottles to drought stricken Papua New Guinea.

The club continued its active youth programs participation - 16 of them. There were three highlights, however. The club sponsored the formation and charter of the Samford Valley Rotaract Club (see separate page) - chartered on the 8th June, 1998, and, through corporate sponsorship, sent nine students to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Award program, and the annual citizenship award presented to local school student, Latasha Duncan. Sonya Brown, the club's nominee to attend the National Science School, just missed selection, but there were a record seven students who attended the Siemens Science School. Robert Spiller attended the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment. This year, also, the club co-hosted a Japanese exchange student, Reiko Oya, as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program.

Reiko Oya, Kanazawa, Japan with Rotarian Mark Stanton and family.

The club had many very interesting guest speakers to address the weekly meetings as well as 'club speakers' participating in "job talks". There were vocational visits, a job search assistance program for unemployed professionals, and a "Pride of Workmanship" award to Neil McTaggart, an employee of the local school. The club was also involved with the "Breaking the Cycle" program.

The club applied for and was awarded a 1997/98 Presidential Citation.

Again this year there was a good attendance to the district conference held at Chandler, Brisbane and four members travelled to Singapore to attend the world conference. And the club finally embrace the computer age and began work on a website which, of course, you are reading at the moment. Some club activities included a good old fashioned car rally, attended a live production at twelfth night theatre, guess who's coming to dinner, Christmas breakfast up at Mt. Glorious and old time dancing.

Following the success of last year, Opera by the Lake was staged again, and whilst not a financial boon, was, nevertheless, a great event. The viability and future of the opera however, is largely dependent on significant sponsorship. The market festival was held again but had run its course and its future is under review.

Rotarians thrashed the Rotaract youngsters twice at ten pin bowling but were soundly beaten at cricket by the members of the Rural Fire Brigade.

As for community service, the citizenship ceremony on Australia Day did not proceed for various reasons, but all other planned projects occurred during the year. Discussions continued with the local authority regarding a maintenance program for the Undambi Rotary Park. These programs will need to be in place and working to enable the club to continue development of the park. Planning continued for the internment of a time capsule on Australia Day, 2000 in front of the Rotary Station, John Scott Park, Samford and the club was again involved in Christmas in the Village.

Samford Rotary is running with an initiative to offer the subsidised supply and installation of smoke detectors in the homes of senior citizens in conjunction with the Rural Fire Brigade. The club continued its strong support for the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund with a contribution of $1400.00 bringing the club to the $250.00 per member milestone.

The club was invited to "man" the bar at a local kickboxing event and are now committed to installing a property numbering scheme to assist emergency vehicles which is being introduced in the Samford valley.

On the international scene, the club continued communications with the Rotary Club of Colombo North, Sri Lanka and great quantities of paper and other stationery was packaged and sent via Donation in Kind to Papua New Guinea. Members also participated in the Donations in Kind program on two occasions during the year.

The club presented a "Pride of Workmanship" award and also the annual citizenship award at the Samford State School "prom". Ryan Williams attended the National Youth Science Forum and one student was sponsored to attend RYLA.

The club enjoyed a very enjoyable visit to the Brisbane Turf Club, Doomben including a 'behind the scenes' tour and a catered afternoon tea.

Samford Rotary also conducted the Samford Talent Quest and, whilst only few entries were received, the event was considered a great success. Also considered a great success, but after considerable effort, was the Art Show. At the end of the week long exhibition, the art show made only a modest profit, but the real benefit can be seen in the uptake of the idea and a continuation of the art show in another form by local artists. In that sense the club performed a significant community service.

1999/2000 was another busy year for Samford Rotary. In the avenue of Community Service, the club ceremoniously interred a time capsule in John Scott Park to be opened in 2050. With the support of the local councillor (our own Bon Millar), the club also participated in the Rural Addressing Project - a numbering system in rural areas to assist emergency services. There's more to be done next year. Rotarians also installed about 100 smoke detectors for our local senior card holders and we coordinated a local collection on behalf of the Salvation Army. The club pledged $10,000 toward the proposed community hall project, and continued its strong support of the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund. This brought the club to the $285.00 per member milestone, the eighth highest per capita in the District.

Samford Rotary also participated in the annual Samford State School Fete, and "Christmas in the Village". 1999/2000 was also the year the club posted its web page on the net.

The club is a regular contributor to the Rotary Foundation and this year, we awarded the "Paul Harris Fellow" to Geoff Voigt. The club was also again active in Donations in Kind including the collection of discarded hospital equipment from the Prince Charles Hospital and transportation to DIK's Tennyson Powerhouse collection centre. The link with The Rotary Club of Colombo North was re-established and 4 'Babyanne' resuscitation manikins were shipped to Sri Lanka for use in training programmes. Samford rotary was able to make a contribution to an East Timorese family in need including the transportation of a man and his son to Brisbane for medical treatment.

The club got to know Ambassadorial Scholar, Matt Doane quite well during the year and the club also initiated an International Toast as a regular part of the weekly meeting routine.

"Four Way Test" certificates were issued to members to place in a prominent position at work and two "What's new in your business" talks were held during the year. For the first time, Samford Rotary presented "Ethics in Business" awards (3) to Peter Cawthorne, Peter Cuttler and Geoff Ward. Cedric Mugridge was awarded the "Pride of Workmanship" award. The club also had several vocational visits during the year.

The club sponsored three students to attend the 2000 RYPEN camp and also sponsored 4 students to attend the Siemens Science experience.

This year together with representatives from other service groups, churches and schools, the club presented two drug awareness seminars during the year. One seminar, aimed at parents and concerned adults and hosted by Channel 9's Heather Foord, included several excellent speakers, videos and static displays.. The other seminar was aimed at kids. Mark Owen, the chaplain of Ferny Grove High School facilitated the evening, which included displays, interviews, sports stars' video clips, sumo wrestling, a live band and a demonstration by the Australian Customs sniffer dog "Roxy", who stole the show. Both evenings were well attended and very successful.

The club also promoted a Christmas "See the World" Art Union, a major fund-raiser for the club netting about $9000 for community activities.

This year was a very successful year in terms of fund raising, with a well attended and very successful "Music by the Lake" and another very successful Christmas Art Union.

The club was introduced to a vision of creating a facility for our community's young people. The project is an ambitious one and this year was put aside to conduct a viability study and to develope the project for presentation to the community.

Christmas in the Village was another successful and enjoyable event.

Membership was a focus of the year with several valued members leaving the club for various unrelated reasons, but the loss was softened by the induction of three new excellent members - Ken Hood, Brian Hansford and Dick Nunn.

Brian Hansford organised a very successful Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal contribution.

2000/2001 will also be remembered as the year of the Paul Harris Fellows. The club awarded four of these - one to Dot Millar, Gwynne Thomas, Wal Ronan, and Rowan Macaulay.

Pride of Workmanship awards were awarded to Ros Burke and Heather Tadgell for their tireless work at our local Samford State School and an Ethics of Business award was given to Phil and Lyndal Hardman of the Samford Post Office.

The club significantly contributed to the Australian Rotary Health Research Fund this year as well as supporting a combined club project - the Rotary Men's Health van. The club also financially supported PolioPlus and Donations in Kind. We co-sponsored Youth Exchange Student, Eric Clarke and looked after Ambassadorial scholars Chris and Rebecca Lee.

The club also sent three more CPR manikins to Colombo.
