The AUSTRALIAN ROTARY HEALTH RESEARCH FUND, (ARHRF), was established in 1981 with the objective of establishing a capital fund, the earnings from which would be used to sponsor Australian researchers in a wide range of research projects in the broad field of Community Health. The first grant was made for research into the then relatively unknown problems of Cot Death and since 1986 more than $5,000,000 has been made available for over 140 research projects in such areas as Drug Abuse and Alcoholism, Depression, Despair and Youth Suicide, Ross River Virus, Environmental Health Problems of the Aged, Alzheimer's Disease and Adolescent Health. Commencing in 1999, the Fund has pledged an amount of $5,000,000 over 5 years towards research into Mental Illness and the advancement of public awareness of the disease. With more than 20% of the adult Australian population estimated to be affected by mental illness in their lifetime and as many as one in eight young people in any one year, Rotary's contribution will not only help demystify some of the myths and mysteries of mental illness but also fund much needed research into better treatments. Financial support for this major Rotary initiative can be made by way of tax - deductible donations through local Rotary clubs. The Samford Club has been a long time supporter of the ARHRF, having made contributions in each of the last 6 years and currently ranking in the TOP TEN clubs in District 9600 for all time giving on a per capita basis ($250 per member).
